New Community Programs Bring Balance to Baytown: Movement and Mindfulness
Chair Volleyball brings a lively twist to one of Baytown’s favorite group activities. Designed for participants of all abilities, the program keeps the fun and teamwork of volleyball alive, just from a seated position. Held every Wednesday inside the Baytown Community Center Auditorium, Chair Volleyball delivers laughter, light competition, and plenty of energy in a safe, indoor setting. It’s free to join and welcomes anyone looking for an easy, social way to stay active without the strain of traditional gameplay.
Complementing the movement-focused Chair Volleyball, In The Quiet – Meditation at the Labyrinth provides space for stillness and renewal. The labyrinth, a recent addition championed by Councilwoman Laura Alvarado, was created as a space for reflection, mindfulness, and community connection. Every second Saturday, participants gather for guided meditation and silent walking through the patterned paths, an experience meant to restore calm and clarity. Beyond these scheduled sessions, the labyrinth remains open year-round for anyone seeking a quiet moment outdoors.

Summer 2025 Project Updates
Over the summer, Baytown Parks and Recreation has been hard at work improving parks, facilities, and green spaces across the city. Several major projects have been completed, and more exciting improvements are on the way. Here is a look at what has been accomplished and what’s coming next.
Baytown Soccer Park – Playground Complete
The new playgrounds at Baytown Soccer Park (4700 Village Lane) are now open. Our Parks Construction Team worked through the summer to complete this long-awaited project. Earlier wet weather had prevented heavy equipment from accessing the site, but with drier conditions this summer, the team was able to install new play equipment for nearby residents, soccer players, and families who visit the park.
This project was made possible through support from the Bay Area Council on Drugs and Alcohol (BACODA), which provided a donation for the playground and fitness course. Additional funding came from a Community Development Block Grant and an equipment grant from Gametime®.
Dale Street Park – Playground Renovation
Baytown’s smallest neighborhood park, Dale Street Park (1604 Sheridan Drive), has been fully renovated with a brand-new play structure, swings, and a restored picnic shelter. Thank you to Gametime® for supporting this project through a playground equipment grant. Visitors near the Plumwood Subdivision are encouraged to stop by and see the improvements.
W.L. Jenkins Park – Fitness Equipment
W.L. Jenkins Park, already home to miles of walking trails and a Fitness Court®, now features new exercise equipment along its trails. This project was sponsored by BeWell™ Baytown to help visitors enjoy additional opportunities for personal fitness while exploring the park.
Wayne Gray Sports Complex – Irrigation Repair
Crews have been working to repair irrigation systems at the Wayne Gray Sports Complex. These improvements are part of ongoing maintenance to ensure the fields remain in top condition for athletes and community events.
Beautification Projects
Baytown Parks and Recreation continues to enhance not only parks but also roadways and public facilities. Recent beautification projects include:
New plantings at Town Square
Landscaping along Bayway Drive
Xeriscaping at Fire Station No. 6 on Pinehurst Street
Upcoming Projects
National Little League Park – Playground Renovation
Renovations are planned for the playground at National Little League Park on Memorial Drive. This project is being funded in part through a grant from Gametime™.
Lakewood Playground and Dog Park
Plans are in development for a new city park in the Lakewood Subdivision. With the help of a grant from ExxonMobil, the community’s request for a combined playground and dog park will soon become a reality.
Nature Center Greenhouse
Progress continues at the Baytown Nature Center. ExxonMobil has donated funds for the greenhouse foundation slab, while the Houston Port Authority contributed toward the purchase of the structure. Completion is anticipated by the end of 2025.
Hunt Road Replanting and Equipment Repair
Replanting efforts are underway along Hunt Road after losses caused by the winter freeze, a major water line break, and theft of electronic irrigation controls. Repairs and new plantings will restore the area in the coming months.
Nature Center Fishing Piers
Fishing piers at the Nature Center were damaged during Hurricane Beryl. Bids for repairs are currently being reviewed, and a start date will be determined once the contractor is selected.
Baytown Parks and Recreation remains committed to creating safe, beautiful, and engaging spaces for residents and visitors. Stay tuned for more updates as these projects move forward.

Volunteer Spotlight

On June 27, Chayce Jreams hosted a College Preparedness Series for high school upperclassmen from GCCISD and brought 15 volunteers to Pelly Park, where they: • Spread fresh mulch • Refreshed benches • Collected litter
The following day, 27 Home Depot volunteers headed to Baytown Soccer Park to apply a fresh coat of paint to the pipe rails — helping preserve the park’s infrastructure and appearance.

Winter 2024-25 Project Updates
As Baytown continues to enhance its recreational spaces, we're excited to share updates on several ongoing park projects. From new amenities to seasonal maintenance, these efforts aim to improve our community's outdoor experiences. Here's the latest on what's happening in Baytown parks.
Tabbs Bay Disc Golf
An elevated golf experience is coming to Baytown with the introduction of a new Tabbs Bay Disc Golf course, set along the outer perimeter of Tabbs Bay Ball Golf Course. This free-to-play disc course will be open to the public, offering a fun and accessible recreational and competitive option for all. While it remains a separate amenity provided by Parks and Recreation, the course is a collaborative effort with Tabbs Bay to enhance the range of public offerings.
The disc golf course will have shared use of some of the ball golf amenities such as golf cart rentals, restaurant and bar service, as well as a clubhouse with restroom facilities.
Read our full announcement here.
Upgrades at the Baytown Soccer Park
Construction on the new playground at Baytown Soccer Park has faced delays due to persistent wet weather and site flooding.
While our team has been actively pumping water from the construction area, the ground remains too saturated to support heavy equipment without risking further damage to the park. We appreciate the community’s patience and will continue to provide updates as conditions improve.
Jenkins Park Lighting Repair
Repairs are currently underway at W.L. Jenkins Park to restore power to damaged light poles along the outer trail.
These efforts will enhance safety and accessibility for evening and early morning parkgoers.
Explore other trails in Baytown.
Holiday Hangout
The 2024-25 Holiday Hangout was a major attraction in the community, made possible by our dedicated park crews who worked to set up, maintain, and tear down all the holiday decorations including the 38-foot Christmas tree over the Town Square water fountain.
In addition to the lights and tree, this season’s Holiday Hangout featured a miniature golf course, roller-skating rink, an expanded glow section with seats and seesaws, along with new featured playground equipment, all installed by parks crews.
Park Maintenance and Winter Weather Preparations
Our winter snowstorm in late January delighted many parkgoers who participated in snowball fights and building snowmen, but the weather also came with risks to park amenities. Our team prepared for and worked to minimize by shutting off water lines to park buildings and covering water fountains with insulation before the freeze.
By closing our restrooms and water fountains during the freeze threat we avoided damage to pipes and water lines.
We're committed to keeping Baytown's parks safe, fun, and accessible for everyone. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue improving our community spaces!

Wild Baytown Tourists
People from all over the world visit Baytown for business, to see family, or simply to explore, but sometimes our city attracts visitors of a wilder kind.
On the morning of January 24th, a local birder at the Baytown Nature Center shared a photo of a pair of Long-tailed Ducks—an exceptionally rare species for this region. These ducks typically breed in the tundras of Canada, Alaska, and Eurasia, so their appearance in Baytown caught the attention of hundreds of birders eager to catch a glimpse. Perhaps the cold, snowy weather lured these arctic seaducks to stay and enjoy the abundant invertebrate life beneath Crystal Bay.
Another unusual visitor is Mushu, the Chinese Alligator, who is currently at the Wetlands Education and Recreation Center's Gatorland exhibit. Native to the Yangtze River Basin, Chinese Alligators are critically endangered, with only a couple hundred left in the wild due to habitat loss, pollution, and overhunting. Mushu is part of a breeding program aimed at increasing the species' population and preventing extinction. Unlike our local American alligators, Chinese Alligators have osteoderms—armor-like plates—covering their entire bodies, not just their backs. Stop by the Eddie V. Gray Wetlands Center to learn more about Mushu and compare him to our native alligators to spot the differences.

Tabbs Bay Disc Golf Course - Coming Soon
An elevated golf experience is coming to Baytown with the introduction of a new Tabbs Bay Disc Golf course, set along the outer perimeter of Tabbs Bay Ball Golf Course.
This free-to-play disc course will be open to the public, offering a fun and accessible recreational and competitive option for all. While it remains a separate amenity provided by Parks and Recreation, the course is a collaborative effort with Tabbs Bay to enhance the range of public offerings.
Course designers Chris Vandagriff and Scotty Linthicum finalized and set tee box and basket positions on the course this week, as the concrete work is slated to begin as soon as next week.
The Tabbs Bay (Red) Course is designed with a recreational and intermediate skill set in mind. However, the course will also appeal to and challenge upper levels of play, as it includes creative and unique features and amenities that have been integrated into the design. In addition to the 18 hole "RED" course, the designers have created and implemented 2 additional 9 hole courses within the same footprint. "BLUE" (Advanced) and "GOLD" PRO level 9 hole tracks share baskets with the RED course to add several longer Par 3's and Par 4's. It was important to the designers and to the integrity of the course that this was considered from inception.
The disc golf course will have shared use of some of the ball golf amenities such as golf cart rentals, restaurant and bar service, as well as a clubhouse with restroom facilities. Additionally, a fully lit parking lot with ample parking will ensure convenience for daily visitors as well as event crowds.
The course will officially open in April 2025, following a March soft opening. Soft opening completion date is March 1 to allow players time to practice for the upcoming 30th Annual Texas State Championships, of which Tabbs Bay will host the E-Pool players on March 30.
On top of the 3 distinct courses, future phases of the property will also include a state of the art Disc Golf Practice Facility. 6 throwing stations with 11 Innova Pro 28 Baskets set at different distances and angles, creating distinct, practice fairways. Each station will include a tee pad, bench, shade structure and a custom made disc rack for ease of use.
With its blend of challenging courses, top-tier amenities, and commitment to community engagement, the Tabbs Bay Disc Golf Course is poised to become a premier destination for both recreational players and competitive athletes alike.

A Tradition of Dance, Family, and Unbreakable Bonds
For many fathers, the Daddy and Me Dance is more than just a fun event—it's a beloved tradition that brings joy, laughter, and unforgettable memories year after year. Gilbert Garcia, who has attended every Daddy and Me Dance since 2015, knows exactly how special these evenings can be.
His journey began when his daughter Sophia, then just 4 years old, attended their first dance together. “I think all of us as fathers definitely need the time away with our girls and enjoy one special night to ourselves,” Gilbert says.
That night sparked the start of an annual tradition—one that has since become a highlight of their year. Now, his daughter is 13, and the family dynamic has expanded.
As his daughter grew, so did the family attending the dance. Over the years, Sophia’s new stepfather, Eddie Sandoval, and her younger sisters, Melanie (5) and AJ (4), joined the tradition. The group also grew beyond the immediate family when they began inviting close friends from church to attend.
Together, they have created a fun, lasting tradition where the fathers and daughters spend a special evening dancing, laughing, and celebrating their bonds.
“My experiences with the Daddy and Me dance have always been filled with joy,” Gilbert recalls.
The Daddy and Me Dance is set to return in 2025 with a Western-themed celebration that promises to be as memorable as the previous ones. There will be dancing, games, activities, and plenty of opportunities for photos. The event will also offer delicious refreshments, making it the perfect outing for families looking to enjoy a fun and meaningful evening together.
The 2025 Daddy and Me Dance will take place on Saturday, February 1st, from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM as a come-and-go event at the Baytown Community Center located at 2407 Market Street. Tickets are priced at $12.50 per person if purchased by January 31st, after which they will be available at the door for $20.

Exciting Upgrades at the Baytown Soccer Park
Our work at the Baytown Soccer Park on Village Lane continues, with enhancements underway:
• Field Leveling: To improve the safety and quality of play, we’re leveling damaged soccer fields, creating a smoother playing surface for all ages.
• New Playground & Ninja Obstacle Course: A new playground and a challenging ninja obstacle course for older children are being installed. This ninja course will test strength and agility, making the complex a top destination for family fun and active play.
• Restroom Facility Repair: Crews are conducting essential repairs to the restroom facilities, ensuring these areas are functional and clean for visitors.
New Accessible Kayak Launch at Baytown Nature Center
We’re thrilled to announce the installation of a new accessible kayak launch at the Baytown Nature Center! This launch provides easy access for everyone to kayak along our beautiful waters for fishing, recreation, or a peaceful paddle in nature. Designed with accessibility in mind, this addition makes it easier for all visitors, including those with mobility challenges, to safely enjoy the water.
New Shade Structure at Central Heights Park Playground
Protecting our little ones from the Texas sun is a top priority. We’ve added a new shade structure over the playground at Central Heights Park! This shade not only keeps the play area cooler but also helps prevent sunburn, ensuring that kids can play safely throughout the day. It’s a welcome upgrade for families and a popular spot for children to explore and have fun in comfort.
Disc Golf Course Coming Soon to Evergreen Park
We’re excited to share that plans are underway for a new disc golf course at Evergreen Park! Disc golf is a fun, family-friendly activity that everyone can enjoy, whether you’re a beginner or an experienced player. Stay tuned for updates as we move closer to installation.
Ongoing Park Maintenance Projects
Keeping our parks safe and well-maintained is a year-round effort. This fall, we’re focusing on essential improvements:
• Hurricane Beryl Clean-Up: After the impact of Hurricane Beryl, our Parks Department has been hard at work cleaning up debris, assessing damage, and restoring parks to their original beauty. Their dedicated work has been instrumental in reopening our spaces quickly and safely.
• Decomposed Granite Trail at Jenkins Park: A new layer of decomposed granite is being laid along the popular walking and jogging trails at Jenkins Park. This trail enhancement improves stability and accessibility for walkers, runners, and cyclists.
Our parks will continue to improve, with new projects planned to enhance our spaces for the future:
• Improvements at Roseland Park: We’re excited to add a new playground component at Roseland Park, expanding options for children to play and explore.
• Fishing Pier Repairs: Hurricane Beryl left its mark, but we’re committed to repairing the fishing piers to restore these beloved spots for anglers and nature lovers.
• Holiday Hangout Prep at Town Square: Baytown’s Holiday Hangout at Town Square is on the horizon, and preparations are already underway to make it a magical event for the whole family. Look out for festive décor, activities, and events to celebrate the season!
Thank you for supporting Baytown Parks & Recreation as we work to enhance and care for our community parks. We hope these new additions and updates make your visits even more enjoyable. Swing into Holiday Cheer with the Duck Soup League
Join the 2024 Duck Soup League: Swing into Holiday Cheer!
As the holiday season approaches, it’s the perfect time to spread some cheer in our community, and what better way to do it than through a fun-filled sporting event? The 2024 Duck Soup League invites you to join in the excitement while contributing to a noble cause: our annual Toy Drive benefiting Baytown's beloved Blue Santa.
For those unfamiliar with the term "duck soup," it signifies an achievement within reach. This year, we’re encouraging adults of all skill levels—whether seasoned athletes or those looking to dip their toes into recreational sports—to participate in a league that promises low-key competition and a whole lot of laughter with friends.
A Whirlwind of Fun
The league offers a mix of sports—softball, kickball, and ragball—along with quirky twists that will keep everyone on their toes. With three weeks of Friday double headers, from November 8 through November 22 at Wayne Gray Sports Complex, there are no playoffs; just pure, silly fun. Each game brings a fresh challenge, where the emphasis is on enjoyment rather than competition.
Game Rules with a Twist
Prepare for a unique game experience with our creative rules by inning:
- 1st Inning: Standard softball with one pitch and no courtesy foul.
- 2nd Inning: Bat opposite-handed using a little league bat.
- 3rd Inning: Reverse bases—run to third base first!
- 4th Inning: Kickball, no bunting allowed.
- 5th Inning: Ragball, with a twist of courtesy swings.
- 6th Inning: Open scoring and underhand throws only!
Team Registration and Toy Drive
To join the league, gather your team and sign up by Tuesday, November 5. Each team registration is $100 plus one unopened toy per player, making your participation a double win: a chance to play and a chance to give. Umpire fees of $20 per game will be collected prior to your match.
Dress Up for the Holidays
Adding to the festive atmosphere, we’ll have themed dress-up days:
- November 8: Wear your favorite Christmas hat!
- November 15: Rock your favorite Christmas PJs!
- November 22: Show off your best ugly sweater!
Bring the Holiday Spirit
This is not just about sporting prowess; it’s about community spirit and spreading joy. Bring your A-game—and a toy for Baytown’s Blue Santa—because the only trophy we’re after is laughter. Join the 2024 Duck Soup League for a holiday season filled with fun, friendship, and festive spirit. Let’s hit the field and make this a holiday season to remember!

Building Community Through Softball
A recent partnership between Goose Creek ISD high schools and the City of Baytown has underscored the power of collaboration in fostering a love for softball. The Fall Youth Fastpitch Clinic, designed for participants aged six to fourteen, emerged as a beacon of opportunity after the cancellation of summer softball camps due to the impacts of Hurricane Beryl. Coaches sought alternative avenues to teach young girls essential softball skills, leading to a remarkable initiative that brought together the local community.
The head softball coaches from Goose Creek Memorial, Lee, and Sterling high schools united with a shared vision: to enrich the sport of softball in Baytown. DeeJay Warner, head softball coach at Sterling, highlighted the significance of introducing young girls to softball early on. She emphasized that without exposure at a young age, many may miss out on the chance to engage with the sport altogether.
This vision catalyzed a collaboration with the City of Baytown’s Parks and Recreation facilities. Utilizing the Wayne Gray Sports Complex enabled all three schools to convene at one location for the clinic. When the proposal reached Athletic Coordinator Lauren Siple, she recognized the potential for an unforgettable fastpitch experience for Baytown’s youth. “This is what creating a cohesive and connected culture is all about,” she remarked, commending high school athletes for their dedication to sharing their knowledge and passion for softball. “This was truly a special moment and a huge collaboration all around.”
The clinic unfolded over four weeks, featuring weekly practices focused on fundamental skills such as hitting, fielding, speed and agility, as well as pitchers and catchers work. Instruction came from high school athletes, supervised by their head coaches, ensuring a supportive and enriching environment for the younger players.
As the program concluded this week, Mariah Wynstra, head coach at Goose Creek Memorial, reflected on its success. She noted that the turnout of young girls exceeded expectations. One of the highlights for Mariah was witnessing the older girls mentor the younger participants, which fostered an environment of encouragement and inspiration. “The cool part is that after they build these relationships, the young girls are invited to watch the older girls play in high school games. They get to see them in their element, which inspires them to stick with the sport and grow into it,” she enthused.
The experiences shared by high school athletes further illuminate the impact of the clinic. Gabriella Menieta from Sterling expressed her joy in passing on what she learned from her coach, wishing she had similar opportunities in her youth. Jadah Garcia from Goose Creek Memorial echoed this sentiment, saying, “It was fun playing games with the girls while learning at the same time. They played well but had fun, too.” She particularly valued the mentoring aspect, which allowed her to share her own skills in hitting.
Morgan Holdren, another athlete from Goose Creek Memorial, reflected on her own childhood experiences with softball in Baytown. “I’ve grown up in Baytown. I started softball on my eighth birthday. I remember coming out to these very fields all the time. Playing here was all about community and family support. No matter how I played, there were always people cheering me on, especially my mom. It made me want to keep playing,” she reminisced. Morgan's reflections remind us of the deep-rooted community ties that sports can foster.
This initiative highlights the vital role of sports in bringing together generations of athletes, each supporting the next and instilling a love for softball in the community. As we celebrate the success of the Fall Youth Fastpitch Clinic, we recognize that through collaboration, dedication, and shared passion, we can inspire the next generation of athletes to thrive in Baytown.

Explore the Game of Pickleball
Pickleball has been one of the fastest growing sports in America for three years in a row, deemed a “game for everyone”. If you’ve been interested in the sport, but haven’t known how to begin, we have everything you need to dive right in!
1) Starting is as easy as dropping inside the Baytown Community Center (2407 Market Street, Baytown) on Mondays and Wednesdays for free admission to “Open Play”. If you come from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., we have a designated indoor court for beginners to play around. We even provide the equipment, so all you have to do is walk in. If you have already been playing the game and are just looking for friends to compete against, you can drop into Open Play on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
2) Once you catch the bug and want to learn more, you can sign up for our “Pickleball Clinic” set for Monday, September 16. There is a beginner session ($35), intermediate session ($35), and youth session ($20). The equipment will be provided and it is a great time to get advice on getting started with your own equipment.
3) Now that you have some knowledge of the game and equipment, you can spend some time at the dedicated Pickleball courts outdoors at N.C. Foote Park (2428 W Main St, Baytown) right next to the Community Center. The court is open to the public 7 days a week from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. This will give you plenty of practice time to hone your skills and master the game.
4) Next, it’s time to level up and try out a “Pickleball League”. The league consists of official competition games where you will need to provide your own paddle and a partner. You and your teammate will go up against other teams at the outdoor tennis courts located at Pirates Bay (5300 E Rd, Baytown) on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. The Fall 2024 League starts September 24 and plays through October 17. The winners receive champion swag and free entry to the next league!
