[ARCHIVED] Neighborhood Gets New Street Art

West Baytown Gets New Neighborhood Street Art

The intersection of Louisiana and Kentucky streets just got a lot brighter! A large-scale, triangular street art design now adorns the street in front of Bergeron Park, showcasing a special sarape inspired design. The project was part of a Neighborhood Empowerment Grant, a program created to bring neighbors together around a community-driven project.

Back in January, the West Baytown Civic Association began working with the City of Baytown Community Engagement team to decide on a location and design elements to be incorporated into a street art project. Artist Angel Quesada was commissioned for the project based on his strong background in community-focused public art projects. Angel, a native Texan, draws on his experiences as a Chicano/x artist and his deep connection to visual arts to inform the use of color, movement, and connection in his artwork.

The West Baytown Civic Association commemorated completion of the project with a ribbon-cutting event this month. Community members met with the artist and West Baytown Civic Association president Fred Aguilar was presented a proclamation in honor of the Street Art Project from Gretchen Wilson on behalf of Commissioner Adrian Garcia from Precinct 2.

The next grant cycle will open on October 1. To learn more about Neighborhood Empowerment Grants, click here.
