[ARCHIVED] The Heat is on!

The Heat is On Story

The Summer heat has already been cranked up with no signs of letting up anytime soon. Here are some helpful tips from the City of Baytown, including some free options to cool down.

Practice Heat Safety

Heat Safety

Do your part and stay hydrated with water. If you’re outdoors, take breaks in the shade when you can. Be sure to check on those who don’t have air conditioners inside their homes because it can still be hot. Also, when using your car, make sure to use a sun visor when exiting your car. Also, never leave kids or pets in your car.

Heat Advisory vs. Excessive Heat Warning (according to the National Weather Service)

Weather info advisories

A Heat Advisory is when the temperature is above 103 degrees, with a heat index above 108 degrees.

An Excessive Heat Warning is issued when the temperature is above 105 degrees and the heat index reaches above 113 degrees.

Cooling Centers

The City of Baytown will open cooling centers when an Excessive Heat Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service.

Baytown cooling centers are located at:

  • Community Center
  • Sterling Municipal Library

The good news is that these two public places are already open during normal business hours. That means you can visit them whether a cooling center has been activated.

Other good places you can visit for free include other public facilities and shopping centers. For more tips and information about heat safety, click here.
