[ARCHIVED] Be Prepared For Hurricane Season

Hurr1Hurricane season is here and the City of Baytown wants to make sure the community is ready, aware, and prepared in the event of a storm impacting the bay area. The City recently hosted a Hurricane Preparedness Workshop. Experts from the National Weather Service and City departments were on hand to discuss this year’s season.

The current hurricane forecast from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, predicts an above-average season for the third year in a row.

David Alamia, Baytown’s Emergency Management Coordinator, said, “Remember, it only takes one hurricane to make it an active season for Baytown.”

Now is the time to prepare to make sure you, your family, and friends are ready in the event of an emergency.

Hurr2Every resident is encouraged to take the following steps:

  1. Be Informed- register with the City of Baytown’s Emergency Notification System Swift 911. Information will be posted and updated on the City of Baytown’s website, the City of Baytown’s Facebook page and other social media channels.
  2. Build A Kit- ensure you have 5-7 days of emergency supplies to stay in your home or evacuate.
  3. Make A Plan- have a family preparedness plan with contacts, evacuation routes, and designated shelters outside the risk area.

So how is the City preparing for the season? Baytown Fire and Police have High-Water Rescue Vehicles tested and ready to be mobilized. The City has serviced all generator units. The newly BAWA East facility is compliant with the newest Texas Department of Insurance wind load standards to help withstand severe storms. City staff have been having meetings to prepare staff with expectations, along with specific duties.

The hurricane season will end November 30th. You’re encouraged not to wait until a storm arrives to prepare. Save yourself the headache and make your plans now.
