America’s 250th Anniversary

In 2026, the United States marks its 250th anniversary, also known as the Semiquincentennial. This milestone commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, when the original thirteen colonies declared their freedom and began the journey toward becoming a united nation. The 250th anniversary is a moment to reflect on America’s history, honor the sacrifices that shaped the country, and celebrate the enduring principles of freedom, democracy, and opportunity. It invites communities across the nation to look both backward with gratitude and forward with hope, recognizing how far we have come and the promise of what lies ahead.

What America Celebrates Each Year on July Fourth

Independence Day celebrates the birth of the United States as a free and independent nation. It honors the courage and determination of those who sought liberty, self-governance, and equality. Each year, Americans celebrate not only a historical event, but the ideals that define the nation: freedom, unity, resilience, and the right to pursue a better future. July 4th is a reminder that America’s story is one of continual growth, shaped by generations who have worked to uphold and expand these founding values.

How Baytown’s Fourth of July Celebration Began

Baytown’s Fourth of July traditions began in the 1950s at Roseland Park with the Miss Baytown Beauty Pageant, giving families a place to celebrate independence close to home. Contestants paraded around the swimming pool, winners were honored at the Brunson Theater, and the community gathered for music, performances, and picnics. The 1954 celebration featured the Robert E. Lee High School Band, the Crystal Clowns aquatic team, and an estimated 4,000 spectators enjoying the festivities. Over time, the celebration moved to Bicentennial Park, where attendance has grown and the event has evolved into one of the area’s most anticipated annual traditions. Free concerts, nationally recognized performers, and spectacular fireworks continue to unite generations while honoring Baytown’s long-standing commitment to celebrating America’s independence.
