One Book, One Baytown Reader’s Experience
Sterling Municipal Library invites all of Baytown to participate in this year’s One Book, One Baytown program. The annual “One Book” program encourages community members to read the same book and come together to discuss it in a variety of settings.
The selection for this year’s One Book, One Baytown is Wings and a Ring: Letters of War and Love from a WWII pilot by Texas City author Rene Palmer Armstrong. Armstrong and a friend transcribed 295 letters they discovered from a young WWII airman to his sweetheart. Using these letters and military documents from that time, Armstrong weaves together a fabulous true story of life and love during wartime.
Sterling Library has also created a unique Reader’s Experience to encourage readers to discover more about World War II. The Library is making available special “Ration Books” that readers can take to a variety of World War II related locations and events throughout Baytown and Houston. For each experience readers complete, they will receive a stamp in their “Ration Book.” Readers who complete 5 or more of the experiences will receive a prize from the library.
Experiences that can earn readers a stamp include visiting places such as the WWII display at the Baytown Historical Museum, the war murals at Ken Pridgeon’s Gallery on Texas Avenue, the Battleship Texas, the Houston’s Holocaust Museum, or the WWII Memorial in Houston’s Heights neighborhood. Other experiences include checking out a library book about WWII, writing a letter to a U.S. armed services member, and “liking” the One Book, One Baytown Facebook page. Stamps can also be earned for attending Evening with the Author featuring Wings and a Ring author Rene Palmer Brown on Tuesday, August 14 at 7 pm, and for participating in the library ‘s book discussion on Tuesday, August 21 at 6 pm.
