For those who love nature and water, kayaking is a great opportunity to experience both For those who have ever wanted to learn about kayaking, but have no idea how to get started, the Baytown Nature Center has the perfect solution on August 4, SmartStart Kayak Paddling Orientation. The class will be taught as part of the City’s successful “Nurture Nature” program, held monthly at the Baytown Nature Center (6213 Bayway Drive). Patti Carothers of SouthWest PaddleSports will present the class from 10 am – 11:30 am. The workshop is free with admission to the nature center. Admission for adults and children over 13 is $3.
Ms. Carothers is an American Canoe Association certified Kayak Instructor and Instructor Trainer. The introductory course focuses on kayak and paddle selection, basic paddling equipment, kayaking safety and etiquette, and beginning kayaking strokes. Depending on wind and water conditions, there may be an opportunity to learn how to get in and out of a kayak on the water. Information will also be shared on local paddling trails and other classes on safe and responsible kayaking. Sit-on-top and sit-inside kayaks will be on display, as well as different types of kayaking gear. All kayaking gear for the class is provided, so attendees should just wear close-toed shoes that can get wet and quick drying clothing.
This is an excellent introduction to a lifetime hobby/sport for all ages.
