The City of Baytown Health Department now provides a new service that allows the public to view food service inspections online. The website is located at http://www.baytown.org/content/restaurant-scores-and-food-service-applic....
At the site you can search for a facility by name, zip code, or browse by first letter. The inspection results for each establishment are provided chronologically for the past year, with the most recent inspections displayed first. Membership is not required unless you would like to be notified when a new inspection has been done at a specific facility. The violations are provided along with a score.
The City uses a 27-item inspection report that was developed from the Texas Food Establishment Rules, which was adopted by the Texas Board of Health in September 1998. The inspection report is prioritized with violation items that are critical and non-critical. Each violation item is assigned a value; these are totaled and subtracted from 100 to determine the score. There are 14 critical items that are worth 4 or 5 points each; the remaining 13 items are worth 3 points each. An item is only counted once regardless of the quantity of like observations, i.e. a pest problem is counted as 3 points regardless of the quantity or different types of pests.
