Discover the Nightlife at the Baytown Nature Center

Mark your calendars for a truly unique Baytown experience.  Each month Naturalist, Crissy Butcher leads a 90-minute tour to different areas of the center to search for nocturnal animals and experience their habitat. On Saturday, January 14, Baytown Nature Center’s popular program, Full Moon Hike offers visitors the chance to explore the grounds by moonlight.

Participants should meet at 5:30 pm at the Visitor’s Center parking lot at 6213 Bayway Drive. The program is included with general nature center admission fees of $4 for ages 13 and above and $1 for children 5-12 and seniors.

Hikers are asked to dress for the weather and wear comfortable clothing and footwear. In cases of severe weather, hikes will be cancelled. If in doubt, phone the nature center at 281-424-9198 or check the nature center’s Facebook page.

Very young children should not attend since the chances of viewing nocturnal animals are much greater in a relatively quiet atmosphere. Starting times change monthly according to sunset and moonrise and routes vary so the entire park is visited.

Animal behavior can be characterized by the times they are most active. Three categories determine this: diurnal, or daylight, nocturnal, or nighttime and crepuscular, or twilight (dawn or dusk). Beginning the hike before dark often gives visitors the possibility to see all three. Take advantage of this rare opportunity to enjoy the nature center after hours and visit nocturnal habitats that are home to owls, raccoons, opossums and other wildlife that emerge after dark. This time of year is especially good for hearing owls calling to one another. Be there as the day shift turns in for the night and the night shift awakens to search for food, water or even a mate.

The second Full Moon Hike of the year will be on Saturday, February 11 at 5:30 pm. The complete yearly schedule may be viewed at http://www.baytown.org/city-hall/departments/parks-rec/baytown-nature-center.
